Wow.
What a strange month April was. First off, for those who don't know,
I've been working at Big Apple
Conventions as the Director of Operations. It was something I did
in my spare time and it was a lot of fun. Then Gareb Shamus (owner of
Wizard Magazine and Wizard World
Conventions) acquired Big Apple. I wasn't so much out of a job,
because Wizard was only going to be running the Fall convention of Big
Apple. All the other Big Apple shows, Mike Carbonaro and I would still
run.
So,
I went to a meeting with Wizard to give them some ideas of things that
we always wanted to do with Big Apple, but could never afford... and
then they offered me a job. A FOR REAL job. Like a Monday to Friday,
9-5 job. I haven't had one of those in over 10 years! Well, it took
a lot of negotiations, and I finally agreed to give up my freewheeling
lifestyle to become the Convention Coordinator for Wizard World! I would
be the guy running Wizard World Philly, Chicago Comic Con, and the newly
re-designed Big Apple Convention. Wow.
I started
on a Wednesday and mentioned that this weekend was Chiller Theatre show.
I asked if they had a rep going there who would talk to the vendors,
hand out fliers to the attendees, and invite some new Media guests.
Apparently, they had no one. So they asked if I wanted to do it. Really?
Have Wizard pay me to go to a convention and schmooze? Hells yeah!!
I realized
after the fact that it was almost 9 years ago to the day that I attended
my first Chiller Theatre and was roped into working there as a Volunteer.
Over the years I've worked all sorts of jobs (for free) at various conventions.
From checking wristbands, to working security, to working at registration.
And now, a mere 9 years from that first humble experience as a volunteer,
I'm now the Convention Coordinator for three of the biggest Conventions
on the East Coast.
Inspiring,
isn't it?
First
off, here's a pic of how my dog sleeps. She burrows under a blanket,
and for some reason has one part of her body sticking out. This time
it's her nose. Other times it's her leg or tail.

Saturday
I didn't
have a lot of time to set it up, but I was able to turn 2 Big Apple
tables into a Big Apple table and a Wizard World table. At the table
we gave out magazines, comics, and we had hourly raffles to give away
all sorts of toys, and at the end of the day, a giant statue!
